Reflective Summary

This nursing portfolio will continue to grow as my career progresses. It is clear that my interest in public health, particularly in women's and children's health, will be a driving force throughout my career.

My interest in public health began during my undergraduate nursing education when I first learned about the impact that social determinants, access to healthcare, and preventive measures have on the well-being of individuals and communities. As I gained experience in hospital and community settings, I  found myself drawn to patient education and advocacy, particularly in the context of maternal and child health. This sparked my interest in the broader, systemic issues affecting the health of women and children in our society.

As I continued to develop my nursing skills, I increasingly recognised the importance of prevention and early intervention. I saw how effective public health initiatives could empower women to take charge of their health during pregnancy, ensuring better outcomes for both mother and child. The idea of creating a healthier future for the next generation by focusing on the health of mothers and children deeply resonates with me.

Communities and countries and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women.” — Michelle Obama

My nursing portfolio reflects my journey from a nursing student to a graduate registered nurse and, eventually, to a public health officer. The concept map showcases my potential learning and experience, my pursuit of additional education to better understand the complexities of public health and my goals of transitioning into a public health focused role. The experiences and personal strengths documented in my portfolio demonstrate my commitment to these goals. Additionally, it details my future involvement in health education programs and my participation in research projects related to women's and children's health. It also highlights my efforts to stay informed about the latest developments in the field, such as advances in reproductive health, maternal care, and early childhood development. I am dedicated to addressing health disparities, advocating for health equity, and playing a role in shaping policies and interventions that promote the well-being of women and children.

My nursing portfolio serves as a narrative of growth and learning and sets a clear trajectory toward becoming a public health officer specialising in women's and children's health (Cope & Murray, 2018). I am excited to continue building on my foundational knowledge, making a meaningful impact, and contributing to healthier, more equitable communities for women and children in the years to come.
